Streaming giant Spotify has acquired Betty Labs, the technology company behind the live audio platform Locker Room.
Seeking a foothold in the social audio space following a surge of interest in the Clubhouse platform, the focus of the deal is sports-focused Locker Room. Terms were not disclosed, but the Wall Street Journal reports that the acquisition is worth US$50 million.

Having only been launched by Betty Labs in October 2020, Spotify confirmed it will ‘evolve and expand’ Locker Room for a ‘wider range of creators and fans’. The rebranded platform will have a focus beyond sports and be more akin to Clubhouse or Twitter Spaces.
Like Clubhouse, Locker Room hosts live conversations between listeners and hosts. Betty Labs counts National Basketball Association (NBA) stars Andre Igoudala and Kevin Durant among those who invested in its US$9.3 million initial fundraising round.
“Creators and fans have been asking for live formats on Spotify, and we’re excited that soon, we’ll make them available to hundreds of millions of listeners and millions of creators on our platform,” said Spotify's chief research and development officer Gustav Söderström.
Spotify plans to use its proprietary machine-learning technology to deliver live audio to users based on their interests, offering a point of difference to its established competitors in the space. The acquisition continues the audio streaming platform’s move away from its previous solely musical focus, after a year when it spent heavily expanding its podcast offering.
